Library Intern for Access Services
Position Overview:
Library serves as a major service area for faculty, students, and staff. Librarians answer a variety of questions in person, by phone, and via email and instant messaging. Interns may be asked to assist librarians from time to time in the performance of specific tasks such as serving on information desk to help provide public service and checking orders in variety of formats. By working in the library, interns will gain knowledge in library processes, learn strong public service ethics, and develop critical thinking skills.
Reports to:
Senior Coordinator for Access Services
Essential Duties:
1. Learn the circulation system to serve at the Library information desk.
2. Search for materials using the online catalog and Summon discovery system so as to adequately answer simple reference questions.
3. Shelve and maintain print collections.
4. Help to troubleshoot public printers and computers; provide basic technical support/training to students who use library public equipment.
5. Participate in the recruitment and management of student workers.
6. Maintain the daily operation of the library and report any problems for repair in a timely manner.
7. Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
1. Currently registered undergraduate or graduate student. Or recent graduate who have already received admissions offer for further study.
2. Major in library & information science or related field preferred.
3. Strong public service orientation and exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills.
4. Ability to handle busy situations in a positive and responsible way. Extremely organized, strong attention to detail and a fast learner.
5. Strong English writing and verbal skills.
6. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
7. Work for at least 3 months (can be extended).
